My interpretation of Web 2.0
I had never really heard of the the term Web 2.0 before learning about it in this class. After learning about it briefly in class and researching a little bit, i have a little bit of a better understanding of it. It's impossible to really give it one definition as its not really a term but more of an outlet.
Web 2.0 is best defined to me as the newest generation of internet. It makes using the internet a communication tool of interaction. You can share pictures, thoughts, videos and be able to have people react and interact with whatever your sharing. When you think about networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace and how much people are interacting with one another daily it's astonishing. Someone posts a status and you can "like"it; someone posts a picture and you can share it, comment on it, or "like" it. Its a constant cycle of sharing, communicating, and feedback.
As a Journalism major, I look at how Web 2.0 can allow pretty much anyone to be a journalist in a sense. People can be informed of news going on through Twitter and Facebook before it even gets published in a newspaper.
Everything on the Internet can also be altered. Anyone can see what you publish to the Internet, but that also means anyone can alter it. A picture that you upload can be altered to look like something else. For example what were doing in class, the Wikis can be changed from what you originally put.
The Web is forever changing and I think the communication and interaction on the Internet is just going to get more advanced.
Web 2.0 Report
Web 2.0 is the second generation of the World Wide Web. Its major difference from the previous edition is that it emphasizes on sharing information and collaboration. It's not just about reading what's on the web, but about being able to interact with what you are viewing. It's changing the interface of the Internet. Some main aspects of Web 2.0 include blogs and wikis.
A good reference for Web 2.0 is Wikipedia. Collaboration is one of the characteristics of Web 2.0 and that's exactly what Wikipedia is. You can write your own wiki page or add and change someone else's.
Social Media as been a major outlet for Web 2.0 to get information out to people and shared between those people. According to the Wikipedia page for Web 2.0, Web 2.0 doesn't refer to an update but rather as a collective change.
Tim O'Reilly, the founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media, held a conference to further explain what Web 2.0 really is. According to an article he published, he showed the differences between Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. An example is the movement from screen scraping to web services, or from page views to costs-per-click.
Something to think about is how the Web 2.0 users feel about their Web 2.0 experience. In an article by Scott Swope, he talks about the challenge of satisfying the customers and users. It tells that companies that utilize social media should be able to do certain thins such as monitoring the amount of social media interactions or "cutting through the noise" to find the information directly related to their company.
Web 2.0 will soon be changed, just as Web 1.0 was.
